Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the browser engine in Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 10.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.3, Thunderbird 5.0 through 10.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.3, and SeaMonkey before 2.8 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors.
The weakness was presented 03/13/2012 by Christian Holler (Nils) as MFSA2012-19 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0462 since 01/09/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58344 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2012:0387)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120029 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:0387)).
Upgrading to version 3.6.28, 10.0.3 or 11.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
