McAfee Email and Web Security (EWS) 5.x before 5.5 Patch 6 and 5.6 before Patch 3, and McAfee Email Gateway (MEG) 7.0 before Patch 1, allows remote authenticated users to reset the passwords of arbitrary administrative accounts via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 03/15/2012 by Ben Williams with NGS Secure Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kc.mcafee.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4582 since 08/22/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Upgrading to version 5.5 Patch 6, 5.6 Patch 3, 7.0 Patch 1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
