McAfee Email and Web Security (EWS) 5.x before 5.5 Patch 6 and 5.6 before Patch 3, and McAfee Email Gateway (MEG) 7.0 before Patch 1, does not properly encrypt system-backup data, which makes it easier for remote authenticated users to obtain sensitive information by reading a backup file, as demonstrated by obtaining password hashes.

The weakness was shared 03/15/2012 by Ben Williams with NGS Secure Research (Website). The advisory is available at kc.mcafee.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-4584 since 08/22/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept.
