Stack-based buffer overflow in Image RAW in Apple Mac OS X 10.5 before 10.5.8, and 10.4 before Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.6, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted Canon RAW image.
The weakness was released 08/05/2009 by Chris Evans with Google Security Team (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-1728. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40502 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.8 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116547 (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Security Update 2009-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2009-08-05-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
