Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.0 ImageIO memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.0 (Operating System). This affects an unknown function of the component ImageIO. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in ImageIO in Apple Mac OS X 10.5 before 10.5.8, and Safari before 4.0.3, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via an image with crafted EXIF metadata.

The weakness was disclosed 08/05/2009 by Clint Ruoho with Google Security Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-2188. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/11/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40554 (Safari < 4.0.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116547 (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Security Update 2009-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2009-08-05-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (52386), Tenable (40554), SecurityFocus (BID 35954†), OSVDB (56842†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1022674†). The entries VDB-3959, VDB-4017, VDB-4132 and VDB-41542 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
