Microsoft Excel 2003 SP3, 2007 SP2 and SP3, and 2010 Gold and SP1; Office 2008 for Mac; Excel Viewer; and Office Compatibility Pack SP2 and SP3 do not properly handle memory during the opening of files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted spreadsheet, aka "Excel File Format Memory Corruption in OBJECTLINK Record Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 05/08/2012 by Omair as MS12-030 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website) via Microsoft. It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0142 since 12/13/2011. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59046 (MS12-029 / MS12-030: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2680352 / 2663830) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110160 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-030)).
Applying the patch MS12-030 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12311.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (72871), Tenable (59046), SecurityFocus (BID 53373†), OSVDB (81727†) and Secunia (SA49112†). The entries VDB-5351, VDB-5350, VDB-5349 and VDB-5348 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
