Microsoft Excel 2003 SP3 and Office 2008 for Mac do not properly handle memory during the opening of files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted spreadsheet, aka "Excel Memory Corruption Using Various Modified Bytes Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 05/08/2012 with Microsoft as MS12-030 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website) via Microsoft. The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0143 since 12/13/2011. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59046 (MS12-029 / MS12-030: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2680352 / 2663830) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110160 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-030)).
Applying the patch MS12-030 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12308.
