Use-after-free vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox 3.5.x before 3.5.10 and 3.6.x before 3.6.4, and SeaMonkey before 2.0.5, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors involving multiple plugin instances.
The weakness was presented 06/24/2010 as Bug 532246 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1198 since 03/30/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47788 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2010:0499)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118158 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2010:0500, RHSA-2010:0501)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9910.
