A vulnerability was found in Moodle up to 1.9.0 (Learning Management Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the MNET access-control interface in Moodle before 1.8.13 and 1.9.x before 1.9.9 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via vectors involving extended characters in a username.
The weakness was released 06/28/2010 by Emmanuel Bouillon (SkOd) as Bug 605809 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-2228 since 06/09/2010. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47219 (Fedora 12 : moodle-1.9.9-1.fc12 (2010-10286)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118503 (Fedora Update for Moodle (FEDORA-2010-10291)).
Upgrading to version 1.9.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
