The KSES text cleaning filter in lib/weblib.php in Moodle before 1.8.13 and 1.9.x before 1.9.9 does not properly handle vbscript URIs, which allows remote authenticated users to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via HTML input.
The weakness was presented 06/28/2010 by Emmanuel Bouillon (SkOd) (Website). The advisory is available at cvs.moodle.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-2230 since 06/09/2010. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:lib/weblib.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49717 (Debian DSA-2115-1 : moodle - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118503 (Fedora Update for Moodle (FEDORA-2010-10291)).
Upgrading to version 1.9.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
