Moodle up to 1.9.0 attemptid cross-site request forgery

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Moodle up to 1.9.0 (Learning Management Software). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument attemptid with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in report/overview/report.php in the quiz module in Moodle before 1.8.13 and 1.9.x before 1.9.9 allows remote attackers to hijack the authentication of arbitrary users for requests that delete quiz attempts via the attemptid parameter.

The weakness was shared 06/28/2010 by Emmanuel Bouillon (SkOd) (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-2231. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49717 (Debian DSA-2115-1 : moodle - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118503 (Fedora Update for Moodle (FEDORA-2010-10291)).

Upgrading to version 1.9.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (49717), SecurityFocus (BID 40944†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26273†). The entries VDB-53838, VDB-53837, VDB-53836 and VDB-52996 are related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
