Details
A vulnerability was found in GNOME tomboy 1.0.1/1.2.2/1.4.2/1.5.1/1.5.2 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing in the library LD_LIBRARY_PATH. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The (1) tomboy and (2) tomboy-panel scripts in GNOME Tomboy 1.5.2 and earlier place a zero-length directory name in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH, which allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse shared library in the current working directory. NOTE: vector 1 exists because of an incorrect fix for CVE-2005-4790.2.
The weakness was published 11/05/2010 by Ludwig Nussel as Bug 644606 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-4005 since 10/19/2010. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72130 (GLSA-201401-28 : Tomboy: Privilege escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165167 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:023)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
