epan/dissectors/packet-mongo.c in the MongoDB dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (loop and CPU consumption) via a small value for a BSON document length.
The weakness was shared 08/15/2012 by Ben Schmidt as wnpa-sec-2012-14 as confirmed bulletin (Website) via wireshark.org. The advisory is available at wireshark.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-4287 since 08/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62131 (Fedora 18 : wireshark-1.8.2-1.fc18 (2012-11981)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
