The pcapng_read_packet_block function in wiretap/pcapng.c in the pcap-ng file parser in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.2 allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (divide-by-zero error and application crash) via a crafted pcap-ng file.
The weakness was published 08/15/2012 by Stefan Cornelius as wnpa-sec-2012-24 as confirmed bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4286 since 08/14/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
