Integer signedness error in the vwr_read_rec_data_ethernet function in wiretap/vwr.c in the Ixia IxVeriWave file parser in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.2 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted packet-trace file that triggers a buffer overflow.

The weakness was released 08/15/2012 by Stefan Cornelius as wnpa-sec-2012-25 as not defined bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-4298 since 08/14/2012. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 802945 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120909 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 13.4 Missing).
