Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Wireshark 1.8.0/1.8.1 (Packet Analyzer Software). This affects the function channelised_fill_sdh_g707_format of the file epan/dissectors/packet-erf.c of the component ERF Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the channelised_fill_sdh_g707_format function in epan/dissectors/packet-erf.c in the ERF dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a large speed (aka rate) value.
The weakness was disclosed 08/15/2012 by Laurent Butti as wnpa-sec-2012-16 as confirmed bulletin (Website) via wireshark.org. The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-4294 since 08/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
