A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Moodle up to 2.2.3 (Learning Management Software). Affected is some unknown functionality in the library mod/forum/rsslib.php of the component Access Restriction. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. mod/forum/rsslib.php in Moodle 2.1.x before 2.1.7 and 2.2.x before 2.2.4 does not properly implement the requirement for posting before reading a Q&A forum, which allows remote authenticated users to bypass intended access restrictions by leveraging the student role and reading the RSS feed for a forum.
The weakness was disclosed 07/23/2012 by Daniel Compton (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-3391 since 06/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

Upgrading to version 2.2.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
