Linux Kernel 3.0.62 information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel 3.0.62. This affects an unknown part. This manipulation causes information disclosure. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-6546. There is no exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 3.0.62 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The ATM implementation in the Linux kernel before 3.6 does not initialize certain structures, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a crafted application.

The weakness was shared 03/15/2013 by Mathias Krause (Website). The advisory is shared at kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-6546 since 03/14/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66204 (CentOS 6 : kernel (CESA-2013:0744)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166795 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2014:0536-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82869), Tenable (66204), SecurityFocus (BID 58409†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-39436†). The entries VDB-7842, VDB-7907, VDB-7908 and VDB-58121 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
