A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function dissect_ber_choice. The manipulation of the argument certain with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The dissect_ber_choice function in epan/dissectors/packet-ber.c in the ASN.1 BER dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.15 and 1.8.x before 1.8.7 does not properly initialize a certain variable, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed packet.
The weakness was published 05/24/2013 with Wireshark (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at anonsvn.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-3557 since 05/20/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66881 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : wireshark (MDVSA-2013:172)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 1.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
