A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.8.6 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function dissect_ccp_bsdcomp_opt of the component PPP CCP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The dissect_ccp_bsdcomp_opt function in epan/dissectors/packet-ppp.c in the PPP CCP dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.7 does not terminate a bit-field list, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed packet.
The weakness was released 05/24/2013 as Bug 8638 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-3558 since 05/20/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
