A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Word 2007 (Word Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing of the component PAPX Handler. The weakness was released 10/09/2012 by TippingPoint with HP TippingPoint as MS12-064 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-0182 since 12/13/2011. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62459 (MS12-064: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Word Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2742319)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110192 (Microsoft Word Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-064)).

Applying the patch MS12-064 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12596.
