The weakness was presented 10/09/2012 with Microsoft as MS12-065 as confirmed bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2550 since 05/09/2012. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62460 (MS12-065: Vulnerability in Microsoft Works Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2754670)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110191 (Microsoft Works Remote Code Execution (MS12-065)).

Applying the patch MS12-065 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12753.
