CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8/1.0.0m/1.0.1h (Network Encryption Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function OBJ_obj2txt of the component Pretty Printing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality.

The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was disclosed 08/06/2014 by Ivan Fratric with Google Security Team as secadv_20140806.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at openssl.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-3508 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3319 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80724 (Oracle Solaris Third-Party Patch Update : openssl (cve_2014_3508_information_disclosure)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122577 (WinSCP OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 0.9.8zb, 1.0.0n or 1.0.1i eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

The fix was developed by Emilia Käsper and Stephen Henson of the OpenSSL development team.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95165), Tenable (80724), SecurityFocus (BID 69075†), Secunia (SA59221†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030693†). The entries VDB-67298, VDB-67299, VDB-67300 and VDB-67301 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
