Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.1h (Network Encryption Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component SRP Ciphersuite Handler. The manipulation of the argument HELLO with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability.
The issue has been introduced in 03/14/2012. The weakness was presented 08/06/2014 by Joonas Kuorilehto and Riku Hietamäki with Codenomicon as secadv_20140806.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at openssl.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-5139 since 07/30/2014. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 875 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77603 (AIX OpenSSL Advisory : openssl_advisory10.asc), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122577 (WinSCP OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.0.1i eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
The fix was developed by Stephen Henson of the OpenSSL core team.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (77603), SecurityFocus (BID 69077†), Secunia (SA60810†), SecurityTracker (ID 1030693†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45720†).
