A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8/1.0.0m/1.0.1h (Network Encryption Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component DTLS Handshake Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability.
The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was released 08/06/2014 by Adam Langley with Google as secadv_20140806.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at openssl.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-3506 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3319 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77603 (AIX OpenSSL Advisory : openssl_advisory10.asc), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122577 (WinSCP OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 0.9.8zb, 1.0.0n or 1.0.1i eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The fix was developed by Adam Langley.Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16741.
