A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8/1.0.0m/1.0.1h (Network Encryption Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component DTLS Handshake Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was released 08/06/2014 by Adam Langley with Google as secadv_20140806.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at openssl.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-3506 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3319 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77603 (AIX OpenSSL Advisory : openssl_advisory10.asc), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
