A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8/1.0.0m/1.0.1h (Network Encryption Software). Affected is an unknown code of the component DTLS Fragment Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was disclosed 08/06/2014 by Adam Langley with Google as secadv_20140806.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at openssl.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-3507 since 05/14/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3319 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77603 (AIX OpenSSL Advisory : openssl_advisory10.asc), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122577 (WinSCP OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 0.9.8zb, 1.0.0n or 1.0.1i eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
The fix was developed by Adam Langley.Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16831.
