OpenSSL up to 1.0.1h ssl_parse_serverhello_tlsext race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in OpenSSL. Affected by this issue is the function ssl_parse_serverhello_tlsext. Performing a manipulation results in race condition. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2014-3509. There is no exploit available. To fix this issue, it is recommended to deploy a patch.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function ssl_parse_serverhello_tlsext. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The issue has been introduced in 03/29/2010. The weakness was shared 08/06/2014 by Gabor Tyukasz (Codenomicon) with LogMeIn Inc. as secadv_20140806.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openssl.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3509 since 05/14/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:

If a multithreaded client connects to a malicious server using a resumed session and the server sends an ec point format extension it could write up to 255 bytes to freed memory.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1591 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78420 (Juniper Junos Multiple OpenSSL Vulnerabilities (JSA10649)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Junos Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122577 (WinSCP OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 1.0.0n or 1.0.1i eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

The fix was developed by Gabor Tyukasz.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (78420), SecurityFocus (BID 69077†), Secunia (SA60917†), SecurityTracker (ID 1030693†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57321†). The entries VDB-67297, VDB-67298, VDB-67300 and VDB-67301 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
