Summary
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL. It has been rated as critical. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component SRP Handler. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-3512. No exploit is available. It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). This affects an unknown function of the component SRP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The issue has been introduced in 03/29/2010. The weakness was published 08/06/2014 by Sean Devlin and Watson Ladd with Cryptography Services, NCC Group as secadv_20140806.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at openssl.org. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3512 since 05/14/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:
Only applications which are explicitly set up for SRP use are affected.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1591 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77603 (AIX OpenSSL Advisory : openssl_advisory10.asc), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122577 (WinSCP OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.0.1i eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
The fix was developed by Stephen Henson of the OpenSSL core team.Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16888.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95158), Tenable (77603), SecurityFocus (BID 69083†), Secunia (SA60810†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030693†). Similar entries are available at VDB-67297, VDB-67298, VDB-67299 and VDB-67300. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
