A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version not known). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component ISO9660 File System Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality.
The weakness was disclosed 01/07/2015 by Prasad J Pandit with Red Hat Product Security Team as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-9584 since 01/09/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82999 (CentOS 6 : kernel (CESA-2015:0864)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167678 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Linux kernel (SUSE-SU-2015:0652-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99640), Tenable (82999) and SecurityFocus (BID 71883†). The entries VDB-10840, VDB-12213, VDB-13142 and VDB-67533 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
