A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 16.0.1/16.0.2 (Web Browser). Affected is some unknown processing of the component Cross-Origin Wrapper Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Mozilla Firefox before 17.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.11, Thunderbird before 17.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.11, and SeaMonkey before 2.14 implement cross-origin wrappers with a filtering behavior that does not properly restrict write actions, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via a crafted web site.
The weakness was presented 11/20/2012 by Bobby Holley (moz_bug_r_a4) with Mozilla Corporation as MFSA 2012-100 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-5841 since 11/05/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63005 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2012:1482)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120702 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:1482)).
Upgrading to version 17.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
