The XrayWrapper implementation in Mozilla Firefox before 17.0, Thunderbird before 17.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.14 does not consider the compartment during property filtering, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended chrome-only restrictions on reading DOM object properties via a crafted web site.

The weakness was shared 11/20/2012 by Peter Van der Beken (moz_bug_r_a4) with Mozilla Corporation as MFSA 2012-99 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4208 since 08/08/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165846 (SUSE Security Update to Firefox 17.0 and other Mozilla (openSUSE-SU-2013:0175-1)).

Upgrading to version 17.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
