A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox 17.0 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function nsWindow::OnExposeEvent. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. Heap-based buffer overflow in the nsWindow::OnExposeEvent function in Mozilla Firefox before 17.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.11, Thunderbird before 17.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.11, and SeaMonkey before 2.14 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was released 11/20/2012 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security as MFSA 2012-105 as not defined advisory (Mozilla Blog). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-5829 since 11/05/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83574 (SUSE SLES10 Security Update : Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SU-2013:0306-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120702 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:1482)).
Upgrading to version 17.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
