A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 17.0 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function gfxFont::GetFontEntry. Use-after-free vulnerability in the gfxFont::GetFontEntry function in Mozilla Firefox before 17.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.11, Thunderbird before 17.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.11, and SeaMonkey before 2.14 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 11/20/2012 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security as MFSA 2012-105 as confirmed advisory (Mozilla Blog). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-4216 since 08/08/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63005 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2012:1482)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120702 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:1482)).
Upgrading to version 17.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
