Unreal Engine 226f/433/436 secure Query memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Unreal Engine 226f/433/436. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component secure Query Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The Unreal Engine, as used in DeusEx 1.112fm and earlier, Devastation 390 and earlier, Mobile Forces 20000 and earlier, Nerf Arena Blast 1.2 and earlier, Postal 2 1337 and earlier, Rune 107 and earlier, Tactical Ops 3.4.0 and earlier, Unreal 1 226f and earlier, Unreal II XMP 7710 and earlier, Unreal Tournament 451b and earlier, Unreal Tournament 2003 2225 and earlier, Unreal Tournament 2004 before 3236, Wheel of Time 333b and earlier, and X-com Enforcer, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a UDP packet containing a secure query with a long value, which overwrites memory.

The bug was discovered 05/24/2004. The weakness was disclosed 06/18/2004 by Luigi Auriemma (Website). The advisory is available at aluigi.altervista.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0608 since 06/29/2004. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ZIP Archive and been published 21 hours after the advisory. The exploit is available at aluigi.altervista.org. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 25 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14547 (GLSA-200407-14 : Unreal Tournament 2003/2004: Buffer overflow in 'secure' queries), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at securityfocus.com.Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling . The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3080. In this case the pattern |5C|secure|5C| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2866.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16451), Exploit-DB (16848), Tenable (14547), SecurityFocus (BID 10570†) and OSVDB (7217†). heise.de is providing further details. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
