Microsoft .NET Framework up to 4.5 System.DirectoryServices.Protocolsb Method thiskeysLength memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft .NET Framework up to 4.5 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component System.DirectoryServices.Protocolsb Method. The manipulation of the argument thiskeysLength with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in a System.DirectoryServices.Protocols (S.DS.P) namespace method in Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2, 3.5, 3.5.1, 4, and 4.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a crafted XAML browser application (XBAP) or (2) a crafted .NET Framework application that leverages a missing array-size check during a memory copy operation, aka "S.DS.P Buffer Overflow Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 01/08/2013. The weakness was published 01/08/2013 by Vitaliy Toropov (rshaw) with Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) as MS13-004 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with Microsoft. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-0003 since 11/27/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.

A private exploit has been developed by Vitaliy Toropov. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63422 (MS13-004: Vulnerabilities in .NET Framework Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2769324)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90857 (Microsoft .NET Framework Elevation of Privilege (MS13-004)).

Applying the patch MS13-004 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13079.
