A vulnerability was found in Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5/3.5 SP1/3.5.1/4 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function Replace. The WCF Replace function in the Open Data (aka OData) protocol implementation in Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, 3.5 SP1, 3.5.1, and 4, and the Management OData IIS Extension on Windows Server 2012, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (resource consumption and daemon restart) via crafted values in HTTP requests, aka "Replace Denial of Service Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 01/08/2013 with Microsoft as MS13-007 as confirmed bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0005 since 11/27/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63425 (MS13-007: Vulnerability in Open Data Protocol Could Allow Denial of Service (2769327)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90856 (Microsoft Open Data Protocol Denial of Service Vulnerability (MS13-007)).
Applying the patch MS13-007 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12707.
