A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Pidgin 2.10.6 (Messaging Software). This vulnerability affects the function mxit_cb_http_read of the file libpurple/protocols/mxit/http.c. Buffer overflow in http.c in the MXit protocol plugin in libpurple in Pidgin before 2.10.7 allows remote servers to execute arbitrary code via a long HTTP header.

The weakness was disclosed 02/13/2013 by Coverity static analysis with Coverity static analysis (Website). The advisory is shared for download at pidgin.im. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-0272 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/05/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68791 (Oracle Linux 6 : pidgin (ELSA-2013-0646)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165895 (SUSE Security Update for Pidgin (openSUSE-SU-2013:0511-1)).
