A vulnerability was found in PCRE up to 8.37 (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function pcre_compile of the file pcre_compile.c of the component Nexting Handler. The manipulation with the input value [: leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The pcre_compile function in pcre_compile.c in PCRE before 8.38 mishandles certain [: nesting, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted regular expression, as demonstrated by a JavaScript RegExp object encountered by Konqueror.
The weakness was disclosed 12/02/2015 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-8391 since 11/30/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88694 (PHP 5.6.x < 5.6.18 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157182 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for pcre (ELSA-2016-1025)).
Upgrading to version 8.38 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (88694), SecurityFocus (BID 82990†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56436†).
