PCRE up to 8.37 Nexting pcre_compile.c pcre_compile Regex Pattern memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in PCRE up to 8.37 (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function pcre_compile of the file pcre_compile.c of the component Nexting Handler. The manipulation with the input value [: leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The pcre_compile function in pcre_compile.c in PCRE before 8.38 mishandles certain [: nesting, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted regular expression, as demonstrated by a JavaScript RegExp object encountered by Konqueror.

The weakness was disclosed 12/02/2015 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-8391 since 11/30/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88694 (PHP 5.6.x < 5.6.18 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157182 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for pcre (ELSA-2016-1025)).

Upgrading to version 8.38 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (88694), SecurityFocus (BID 82990†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56436†). The entries VDB-75695, VDB-79371, VDB-79376 and VDB-79377 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
