Details
A vulnerability has been found in Dell iDRAC6, iDRAC7 and iDRAC8 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Dell Integrated Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) 6 before 2.80 and 7/8 before 2.21.21.21 allows directory traversal.
The weakness was presented 12/02/2015 with Google as Dell iDRAC Response as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at en.community.dell.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Dell. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-7270 since 09/18/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90265 (Dell iDRAC6 / iDRAC7 / iDRAC8 Path Traversal Authentication Bypass), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11581 (Dell iDRAC Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version iDRAC6 2.80, iDRAC7 2.21.21.21 or iDRAC8 2.21.21.21 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
