A vulnerability was found in Dell iDRAC6. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown functionality of the component SSH Interface. The manipulation of the argument Username as part of a Long String leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Dell Integrated Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) 6 before 2.80 and 7/8 before 2.21.21.21 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer overflow) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a long SSH username or input.
The weakness was published 12/02/2015 with Google as Dell iDRAC Response as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at en.community.dell.com. The public release has been coordinated with Dell. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-7272 since 09/18/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11581 (Dell iDRAC Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.80 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
