A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8/9/10 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function OnResize. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 10 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site that triggers access to a deleted object, aka "Internet Explorer OnResize Use After Free Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 06/29/2010. The weakness was shared 03/12/2013 by Arseniy Akuney with TELUS Security Labs Vulnerability Research Team as MS13-021 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-0087 since 11/27/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 987 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65210 (MS13-021: Security Update for Internet Explorer (2809289)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100142 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-021)).
Applying the patch MS13-021 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12822.
