A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 8 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is the function Celement. Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site that triggers access to a deleted object, aka "Internet Explorer CElement Use After Free Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 03/12/2013 by Jose Antonio Vazquez Gonzalez with Exodus Intelligence as MS13-021 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-0091 since 11/27/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65210 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100142 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-021)).
Applying the patch MS13-021 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12815.
