A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8/9/10 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function saveHistory. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 10 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site that triggers access to a deleted object, aka "Internet Explorer saveHistory Use After Free Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 03/12/2013 with Zero Day Initiative as MS13-021 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0088 since 11/27/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65210 (MS13-021: Security Update for Internet Explorer (2809289)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100142 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-021)).
Applying the patch MS13-021 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12814.
