The weakness was released 03/12/2013 by Sunil Yadav with Network Intelligence India Pvt. Ltd. as MS13-024 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-0083 since 11/27/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65213 (MS13-024: Vulnerabilities in SharePoint Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2780176)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110208 (Microsoft SharePoint Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (MS13-024)).
Applying the patch MS13-024 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12826.
