The USB kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, Windows 7 Gold and SP1, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012 do not properly handle objects in memory, which allows physically proximate attackers to execute arbitrary code by connecting a crafted USB device, aka "Windows USB Descriptor Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-1285 and CVE-2013-1287.
The weakness was presented 03/12/2013 by Andy Davis with Information Risk Management Plc. as MS13-027 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1286 since 01/12/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65215 (MS13-027: Vulnerabilities in Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Elevation Of Privilege (2807986)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90871 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Driver Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS13-027)).
Applying the patch MS13-027 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
