Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 Sandbox memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown function of the component Sandbox. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The sandbox protection mechanism in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact via unknown vectors, as demonstrated against Adobe Flash Player by VUPEN during a Pwn2Own competition at CanSecWest 2013.

The issue has been introduced in 03/16/2010. The weakness was published 03/07/2013 with VUPEN Security as MS13-037 as not defined tweet (Twitter). The advisory is shared for download at twitter.com. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-2557 since 03/10/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 05/06/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1087 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82771), SecurityFocus (BID 58561†), OSVDB (91198†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38841†).
