Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Wireshark up to 2.0.0 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected by this issue is the function dissect_tds7_colmetadata_token of the file epan/dissectors/packet-tds.c of the component TDS Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The dissect_tds7_colmetadata_token function in epan/dissectors/packet-tds.c in the TDS dissector in Wireshark 2.0.x before 2.0.1 does not validate the number of columns, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack-based buffer overflow and application crash) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was shared 01/04/2016 with Google (Website). The advisory is shared for download at code.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-8740 since 01/03/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87825 (Wireshark 2.0.0 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 2.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (87825), SecurityFocus (BID 79382†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-55622†). The entries VDB-80067, VDB-80068, VDB-80069 and VDB-80070 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
