A vulnerability was found in Graphite up to 2-1.2.3. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function SillMap::readFace of the file FeatureMap.cpp of the component libgraphite. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. The SillMap::readFace function in FeatureMap.cpp in Libgraphite in Graphite 2 1.2.4, as used in Mozilla Firefox before 43.0 and Firefox ESR 38.x before 38.6.1, mishandles a return value, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (missing initialization, NULL pointer dereference, and application crash) via a crafted Graphite smart font.
The weakness was published 02/13/2016 as MFSA2016-14 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-1523. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
