Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Graphite up to 1.2.3. This vulnerability affects the function TtfUtil:LocaLookup of the file TtfUtil.cpp of the component libgraphite. The manipulation as part of a Graphite Smart Font leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The TtfUtil:LocaLookup function in TtfUtil.cpp in Libgraphite in Graphite 2 1.2.4, as used in Mozilla Firefox before 43.0 and Firefox ESR 38.x before 38.6.1, incorrectly validates a size value, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and application crash) via a crafted Graphite smart font.
The weakness was presented 02/13/2016 as MFSA2016-14 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-1526. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88728 (Debian DSA-3477-1 : iceweasel - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350005 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for graphite2: ALAS-2016-696).
Upgrading to version 1.2.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
