A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Oracle Java up to 7 Update 17 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component JMX. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. Unspecified vulnerability in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) component in Oracle Java SE 7 Update 17 and earlier, 6 Update 43 and earlier, and 5.0 Update 41 and earlier; and OpenJDK 6 and 7; allows remote attackers to affect confidentiality via vectors related to JMX. NOTE: the previous information is from the April 2013 CPU. Oracle has not commented on claims from another vendor that this issue is related to "insufficient class access checks" when "creating new instances" using MBeanInstantiator.

This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-2424 since 03/05/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69742 (Amazon Linux AMI : java-1.7.0-openjdk (ALAS-2013-183)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185051 (HP-UX Running Java5 Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02922)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
